Sunday Rundown: Editing, Composing and Partying!

Blog

This has been such an unbelievably tiring week!  I’ve had 20 hour edit days and have basically been functioning on zero sleep for 7 days…. However, so much has been achieved this week and I’m so so excited to share some of the developments very soon!  Sign up to my mailing list to get an exclusive preview of my next video!

Monday:  I set my goals for November, which always really helps me to focus on my career and visualise where I want to be.  I then had production class as I always do on Mondays, which was awesome as we were learning different sampling techniques.  I was also starting the plans for some upcoming videos, which is super exciting!

Tuesday: I played golf in the morning and caught up on some college work.  I also sent off some Spotify playlist submissions for my latest release, Take It All.  A lot of my day was spent tidying up the ‘studio’ from the Body of Mine shoot…. glitter for dayssss!

Wednesday:  After starting editing last week, Wednesday was day 2 of the Body of Mine edit, and it was a long one (finished at 3am)!  We made some good progress, getting the Intro, Verses and Pre-Choruses sorted.  I also had my Electronic Music Composition class in the evening, which was really fun as we were learning about drums and groove, which is probably the area I struggle with the most.

Thursday: Day 3 of the edit…. finished all but the choruses, which was a little frustrating as we were hoping to have finished completely!  In the evening I went to my golf presentation evening and won myself a cheeky trophy, which was a nice surprise!

Of course, I also sorted my Thursday Twenty for the week!

  1. Burn Slow by Jaira Burns
  2. Flare Guns  by Quinn XCII & Chelsea Cutler – LOVE this!  One of my favs this week… super catchy and it is definitely a topic everyone can identity with – the urge to call an ex at 2:00am is always strong!
  3. Only With You by Cyn
  4. Astronaut by Mansionair
  5. I’ll Be There by King Henry
  6. When I Was Young by MO – Great track!  I love MO as she’s always so left of centre and really unique.  This song has a really interesting structure and there are so many climaxes!
  7. Ready Yet by Sasha Sloan
  8. Losing Any Sleep by Elle Watson
  9. Silence (Sluggo x Loote Remix) by Mike Posner & Labrinth – Another favourite!  Such a great track… the production is gorgeous and the two voices really work and bring something different to the verses.  I’m really feeling a lot of Mike Posner material these days!
  10. I Feel U (feat. Rachel Salvit)
  11. cortado by anton.
  12. Honest by Nataliya
  13. Wolves by Selena Gomez & Marshmello – I just love Selena and I’m a big Marshmello fan too, so this was a great combo for me!  I really think the softness of Selena’s voice is very effective in this song, and the chorus is extremely catchy!
  14. Better by BANKS – I genuinely think no one loves BANKS as much as me!  I went to see her last week and she was predictably amazing.  Better was one of my favourite tracks she did on the night as performance was just flooded with emotion.. it was pretty special to witness!
  15. Lonely by NAV
  16. California Heaven (Medasin Remix) by JAHKOY & Schoolboy Q
  17. end by Jeremy Zucker
  18. Buzzin by Alina Baraz
  19. Badi Boum (feat. Tsunami) by Felix Snow
  20. The Shine by ayokay & Chelsea Cutler

Friday:  I spent five hours composing in the MIDI lab at college and working on a new track!  I feel like I spend so much time promoting myself and contacting people for gigs, sending my music off places etc that I never get to actually make music anymore!  So it was just bliss to be back in that mindset and be creative!  After that it was back to editing the Body Of Mine video…. Day 3 and it didn’t end until 7am on Saturday!  Crazy stressful and we still didn’t finish!  We still had to colour grade and fix a couple of bits in the Middle 8.

7

Saturday:  Final edit day for Body of Mine!  Finally finished at 4:30pm after another four hours of editing and the release that came with the final export was just euphoric…. such a weight of my shoulder!  The video is now ready for the release next week 🙂 Can’t wait to share!

9

I also celebrated Bonfire Night with my brother and best friend and then heading into town for the Warehouse Project!  Me and Abi saw Gorgon City on their Kingdom Tour at the Albert Hall, along with Disciples, Riton and Danny Howard.  It was such a great night and just what I needed after a stressful week of editing!

Sunday:  Dinner with the family for my grandad’s birthday and a bit of much need chill time!  I need to actually sleep!

Thank you so much for reading as usual and remember to sign up to my mailing list!

Sunday Rundown: College Showcase, Mixing and Parklife!

Blog

Sally 9017

This week has felt a little bit like two steps forwards, one step back!  Although I have been really happy how things have progressed in some areas, in others I’ve just felt like things could have gone better… however I think you have to take the successes with the failures and just crack on!

Monday:  Monday was a great day as it was my final college showcase performance!  I performed a set of seven songs from upcoming album, Chemistry, including Poison with a live band.  I really enjoyed performing and getting to show off my songs like that and when I look back on the videos that were taken during the performance, I look the most confident that I have ever looked, which feels like massive progress for me!  Check out a clip of me performing Poison with my backing band for the night ‘The Phat Express’, below!

Tuesday:  Tuesday was a college day as usual and I used my time to focus on mixing and getting vocals on my track, Alive.  We did a studio session on mixing and sorting out the levels of everything roughly, which went well, but then when it came to putting vocals on, not everything went to plan!  For some reason I just couldn’t get a good vocal performance and I wasn’t in the right frame of mind!  Hopefully, next Tuesday will be a different story!

Wednesday:  I spent most of the day finishing my college research project and then went to the driving range to blow off some steam!  I also uploaded my Lead Me Down performance from my Liverpool Gig to YouTube 🙂

Thursday:  I played golf, had a three hour nap (oops :O) and then got my college research project finished!  I also updated my Thursday Twenty playlist on Spotify with all the artists I’m most looking forward to seeing play at Parklife this weekend!  Check it out below:

Friday:  Another day at college, this time focused on rehearsing with a new guitarist I’m working with for my cover gigs!  We’re putting some really cool loop versions of chart songs together so hopefully it will all work out well.  I also got banned from Facebook entirely for 3 days for ‘breaking copyright’ when I posted a 1 min clip of my cover of Shawn Mendes’s ‘There’s Nothing Holding Me Back’, which frankly I think is utterly ridiculous!  Plenty of artists do covers to try and raise their profile, but now I can’t even send messages on my personal or business pages.  What a huge overreaction from Universal Music.

Saturday:  Today I saw Oliver Heldens, The Martinez Brothers, London Grammar, BBK, and Wilkinson… and I also rode the really high up swings!

Sunday:  Sunday was filled with more great artists, including: Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, Mura Masa, Wiley, Flying Lotus, Stormzy and Frank Ocean!

Sunday Rundown: The week I was reminded about how amazing my city really is.

So this week  I saw how evil people can be but also how amazing they can be.  On Monday night, at the Manchester Arena, a suicide bomber killed 22 innocent people and injured many more.  I really have no words when it comes to trying to explain why a person would want to target innocent people at all, but especially a concert full of children and teenagers.  That Ariana Grande concert should have been one of the best nights of their lives, like so many concerts at the arena have been for myself, but instead it became one of the worst.  That type of evil is just indescribable and inexcusable.  However, the way the city banded together was something beautiful to come out of such a horrendous tragedy.   Free taxis, people taking in stranded children and relatives, the Queen visiting victims, poignant vigils and Ariana Grande herself organising a benefit… all of these things helped to reaffirm my faith in humanity.  I am absolutely devastated for my city and for the victims, their friends and their families, but I am also proud of the way Manchester has responded.  Shocked, shaken but never broken.  Obviously this has been on my mind a lot this week, so I thought instead of mentioning it by day in the rundown, I would just write a little something at the start.  I hope from the bottom of my heart that something like this never happens again in Manchester and that the terorists are aware that they cannot break our spirits or rob us of our hope.  In terms of myself this week, I shall keep it brief.

Monday: Not a very busy day music wise for me!

Tuesday: I went into college and worked on Alive again.  This time we recorded some guitar parts for the outdo (that I won’t actually be using it turns out!) and I wrote the lyrics for the final verse, which I have been meaning to do for ages!  I’m ready to put the vocals on next week, which is a great feeling!  Hopefully, I’ll have something to share soon!

Wednesday: I recorded my first loop cover at my keyboard.  I chose to do Charlie Puth’s new song ‘Attention’!  I’m actually a big big fan of this song as the bass line is so catchy!

I then had rehearsals for my gig on Friday in Chester, with my guitarist.  I then went for tea in Chester and had a little wander around!

Thursday: Thursday was the most exciting day of the week as it was the day the Poison video premiered!  It was featured on Indie Music Central and I was so happy as I’ve been waiting to share this for ages!  Think powder paint, drums and glitter….

It was also a sunny sunny day, so I decided to work on my balcony in bikini.  It’s funny how much a bit of sun can improve your day!

As usual, I made my Thursday Twenty playlist and here are the tracks!

Thursday Twenty:

Wonderwall by Ryan Adams – Manchester has obviously been on my mind a lot this week, so I wanted to include this song as it’s an amazing version of Oasis’s classic. It’s so emotional and felt really poignant after Monday’s tragedy.
Most Girls by Hailee Steinfeld – This is my favourite track this week! Just such an amazing message about all girls being unique and not having to apologise for that!
I Was Wrong by A R I Z O N A (Robin Schulz Remix)
TiO by ZAYN – I surprised myself by liking this song as I’m not usually a ZAYN fan!
I’m In Control by Trinix
Deja Vu by Post Malone and Justin Bieber
Table for One by Liana Banks – Super catchy and cool and I love the independent vibe of the lyrics!
AM by Brooks Brown
May I Have This Dance [Remix] by Francis and the Lights (feat. Chance The Rapper) – I was recommended this song by my guitarist, Keenan, as he’s a massive Chance fan and I actually love it! It’s so chilled and the melody is beautiful! I love the fact it’s got an almost 80s Peter Gabriel vibe 🙂
Higher by Maximilian – This is gorgeous and full of intensity and understated drama. Amazing production and vocals!
Poison by Sally Caitlin – I decided to include my track Poison this week as the video has just premiered!
Come Back by Willie Shaw
Body Talk by Julius – I instantly loved this due to the ‘lime and the coconut’ reference… but it’s actually such a feel good song! Perfect for sunny summer days!
Crying in the Club by Camilla Cabello
Bad Liar by Selena Gomez – I’m a hugggeeee Selena fan.. so I was super excited when I saw she had a new song out. I’m so glad she’s stuck with the sultry vibe from Hands to Myself and Good For You… I love it!
I Like Me Better by Lauv – Such a fun song! I find the chorus gets stuck in your head for hours… a great sing-a-long one!
Not Ready by Naffz
Breathe by Lesko
One Last Time by Ariana Grande – I’ve always been very moved by this song and it was my favourite on the My Everything album. Now it has taken on a new meaning across the world as a tribute to the innocent victims of the Manchester attack and I think that’s amazing. I really hope it gets to number one in the charts and sends a message to terrorists that, although we will always mourn victims of their attacks and we will never forget, we will also never be broken and terror will never win.
Champagne Supernova by Oasis – This is my favourite Oasis song as I think the lyrics are beautiful. This pick is for the 22 that lost their lives, the injured, the families of those affected and my amazing city of Manchester.

Friday: I was performing my covers set at a lovely country restaurant in Macclesfield, called the Windmill.  It was very different to most of my gigs and a lot more chilled, but I really enjoyed singing there!

Saturday and Sunday:  I’m up in Scotland for Bank Holiday weekend!  I’m focusing on relaxing, hiking and hopefully getting some writing done!

Thank you for reading as always!  Next week should be exciting as I’ll be able to talk about my gig in Liverpool 🙂

Sunday Rundown: John Mayer, Gullivers and Spotify!

Blog

Starting this week, every Sunday I will be doing a weekly blog talking about everything I have been up to, my favourite music that week and anything exciting I can think of.  This week seemed like the perfect week to start as it’s been amazing and music-filled!  I’ve been to watch two gigs, performed myself, booked tickets for more gigs and started my first Spotify playlist as a verified artist…busy, busy times!  Without further ado, here is the rundown of the past week (8th April to 14th April)!

MONDAY: I spent most of the day rehearsing for my gig on Saturday and getting the loops sorted for my new songs, ‘Warning’ and ‘Shackles’!

TUESDAY: I attend music college every Tuesday and I had a super productive day as I made loads of progress on my first self-produced track, which is called ‘Alive’.  I have been working on the song on Logic for quite a while and am aiming to create really fun but relaxing summer song about running away and staying young…. so we’ll see how that goes!

WEDNESDAY:  Wednesday was a great day as I managed to record a cover for ‘Cover Wednesdays’ on my YouTube channel.  The song I picked was ‘There’s Nothing Holding Me Back’ by Shawn Mendes.  I had heard it the day before, instantly loved it and knew that it was the right song to try and cover.

That evening, I went to a fabulous event in Manchester organised by Punch Records called, ‘Welcome To My City’!  The gig featured five amazing artists: Gambimi, Sub Blue, Kizzy Crawford, Nipah and Tobi Sunmola.  It was great to watch such talented artists do their thing and show off their talent.  I enjoyed having the opportunity to network a little too!

Check out Tobi Sunmola performing his amazing track ‘Run Free’!

THURSDAY:  On Thursday I had more rehearsals, bought my tickets to see Gorillaz (Yayyyyyyy!!!) and also set up my first ‘Artist Playlist’ on Spotify.  I got verified on Spotify last week so it was really excited to finally make a playlist on my artist page showing what I’m currently listening to!  The playlist is called ‘Thursday Twenty’ and is simply twenty songs that I’m loving each week… updated every Thursday!  This week’s picks were:

  1. Waters by Gambimi I loved this song when he performed it live at ‘Welcome To My City’… such a chilled and romantic vibe!
  2. Committed by Sub Blue – Another favourite from the event on Wednesday… a great live performer too!
  3. Lead Me Down by Sally Caitlin – I felt like I should include one of my songs in my first ever playlist!
  4. There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back by Shawn Mendes
  5. Old Friends by Jasmine Thompson – I heard it on the Grey’s Anatomy soundtrack and fell in love with the relatable lyrics!
  6. Hot Blood by Kaleo – Obsessed with this song and the whole album to be honest… just a must listen if you like a bit of rock that isn’t that heavy!
  7. Breathe by Astrid S – Big Astrid S fan… she makes the sort of modern alternative pop which I think has a really fresh sound.
  8. 1998 by Chet Faker & Banks – As the ultimate Banks fangirl I kind of had to include her, but this track with Chet Faker is a lot more summery and softer than her usual offerings.
  9. Quit You by Lost Kings & Tinashe
  10. Not Going Home by DVBBS
  11. It Ain’t Me (Tiesto’s AFTR:HRS Remix) by Kygo & Selena Gomez
  12. Run Free by Tobi Sunmola – Amazing song by a new Manchester based artist… his voice is like Louis Armstrong crossed with Howlin’ Wolf!
  13. Wherever You Go by TRXD ft. Hilde
  14. Wicked Games by The Weeknd – Rediscovered this song and my love for it after playing it on piano again last week… still my favourite song by The Weeknd!
  15. No Promises by Cheat Codes ft. Demi Lovato
  16. Want You Back by HAIM – I love HAIM and their cool brand of alternative pop with catchy hooks and this is the perfect sunny day driving song!
  17. Places by Martin Solveig
  18. Feels (Jai Wolf Remix) by Kiiara
  19. No Don by LottoBoyzz
  20. You Don’t Know Me by Jax Jones ft. Raye

FRIDAY:  Literally the best day ever as my dream of seeing my ultimate idol, John Mayer, in concert came true!  He was absolutely incredible and did not disappoint me at all, despite me having exceedingly high expectations!  He didn’t play my favourite song, ‘I Don’t Trust Myself Loving You’, however, he did play ‘Edge Of Desire’, which is my second favourite!  Managed to get myself some sweet merch, which I haven’t taken off much since the gig!  Just an unbelievable night and a dream come true!

SATURDAY:  On Saturday I, myself, was gigging at Gullivers in Manchester!  I performed some of my original songs for the first time with my loop pedal, drum pad and my acoustic guitarist, Keenan.  Really enjoyed performing and sharing some brand new material, despite being slightly under the weather and completely losing my voice after the show!

SUNDAY: Rest, recuperation and planning for next week!

I hope you have enjoyed this little insight into my day to day life…. I promise next week won’t be quite as long! Thank you for reading 🙂

In April 2016, I was lucky enough to be able to perform at the Fallow Cafe, Fallowfield, as part of the iluvlive Manchester showcase event.  This was a really amazing experience for me as it was the first time I had performed my original songs with a a live band.  The crowd was so friendly and supportive, so it was the perfect place to debut my newest single at the time, Not Stupid Anymore.  I felt extremely privileged to be performing alongside a group of extremely talented artists and to be invited to do such a great event!  Below is a video of me performing my first single, Stuck In Limbo, live at the event.

Falling Back Together

Official Music Videos

For my second single, Falling Back Together, I thought it would be really fun to do a GoPro type video, following me around my favourite places near where I live, in Manchester.  We shot mainly in four locations: the centre of the city, Crosby beach (near Liverpool), The Edge and Etherow Country Park, which are both in Cheshire. The UKG mix of Falling Back Together was used as the lead mix for the video, which worked really well as it has a real sense of movement in the track, matching the walking in the video.  So many of my favourite places are featured in the video, including The Northern Quarter in Manchester, the cathedral and the forest at Etherow! I decided it might be a good idea to do a black and white lyric video to really emphasise the meaning behind the words of the song, and make it even easier for people to learn them!

After That Night

Me and My Career

IMG_0313

This song is going to be on my upcoming EP and is unique as it’s the only song I have ever written where the lyrics were the component written last. Me and my producers decided we wanted to do a song with a chilled ambient house type feel, so they sent me a backing track to write to and see what I could come up with.  It was a bit of an experiment to be honest as I had no idea if I would be able to write a song this way, as I usually write at the piano and sort the lyrics before the melody and accompaniment! However, I actually really enjoyed challenging myself and pushing my writing to a new level!

The subject matter of the song is also unique in relation to my other songs as it is completely fabricated and not based on my own personal experiences.  I decided I wanted to write about cheating in a relationship but not condemning it in a black and white way, so I added the complication of a friendship into the mix.  The story is about two friends who, whilst both in relationships with other people, cross the line and spend the night together. The song is about the consequences of a flirty friendship going too far and the implications on the relationships they are in.  It’s about not being able to forget what happened and not knowing whether the friendship could go back how it was before.  Anyway….. I really hope you enjoy the song and stay tuned for the house and garage remixes which will be coming soon…..

Live Performances

Gigs

IMG_0185

If I’m being honest performing live isn’t something I find particularly easy! The feeling after I have finished singing is impossible to top and just such an amazing buzz…. but the nerves before, for me, are just dreadful. When I was younger I used to get so terrified that I would cry and run away and then have to sing after most of the audience had left!  I finally managed to get over this and work my way up to bigger audiences when I was 17, which was great, but then I got nodules and went to uni, so singing took a back seat.  Therefore, whilst I have been writing, recording and generally getting my EP and album together over the past few years I have been avoiding performing a little bit, but I know I need to get back in the game! There are just a couple of issues with this though:

1) I’m very scared and out of practice… (who knows if I’ll cry and run away?!)

2) The piano is the least portable instrument for open mic nights, small gigs and busking…. people with the guitar have it so much easier!

This being said I am currently looking for low pressure venues in and around where I live in Manchester to possibly perform a set in.  I’m also considering just trying an open mic night or even karaoke just to get my confidence back up.  Learning my songs on guitar is another thing on the to do list, in order for me to be able to just go and play a set anywhere, without having to lug my keyboard and pedal everywhere!

So watch this space…. hopefully I’ll soon be brave enough to be performing somewhere soon!

My Upcoming Music Video

Me and My Career

IMG_0500

I would like to talk about the video that is being planned for one of my songs at the moment!  The plan is to release a ten track EP consisting of both a house and garage remix of five of the songs I have written and this should hopefully be happening this summer.  It has been decided the lead track will likely be the house remix of a song I wrote called ‘Stuck In Limbo’, so a video is now in the works!

Stuck In Limbo is about a volatile relationship, which was going through a particularly rough patch, so I wanted a video that managed to get this story across.  I have been working on potential scripts with the producers of my EP and we have come up with a video idea focussing on a young couple in a relationship that is on the rocks.  In the video they will be shown at the start as disinterested in each other and unhappy, whilst contrasted against a loved up new couple.  As the video develops, the couple becomes further and further apart and this builds to a climax.  In the end the couple have the option to either fight for what they have and patch things up or to leave the relationship behind… and I will leave the ending to be revealed when the song and video are released.

The video will also have some art effects employed in order to intensify the feeling that the couple have lost their passion and their way.  The title ‘Stuck In Limbo’ refers to them being lost and not knowing whether the relationship can or should be saved.  The idea is to have a time lapse effect that makes it seem like the main characters are moving much more slowly than their surroundings to make them seem isolated and in ‘limbo’. The colour saturation of the video will be lower than normal too to give a dull and faded feel to the scenes in order to convey the loss of passion.

So excited to finally start planned things like videos and EP releases in order to try and realise my dream of being a singer as soon as I can! Below is a link to me performing the original version of ‘Stuck In Limbo’ in a studio in London.  Fingers crossed that I will be posting the finished music video on here next!
